HIGH MEADOW

This is my home, a small acreage inside Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, with a renovated farmhouse built in the 40's. The material for the house came from a 19th century church located in the small community of Bogart, Ga. High Meadow is a wondrously magical place with a time machine disguised as a 600 foot drive leading from the hard road. As you approach the house you are transported back to a much simpler and tranquil era, a time when life itself was celebrated as the primary reason for existence and being a part of the natural world was accepted as reality. The sounds of modern civilization are muted by the whispering of the breezes through the trees, evoking thoughts of past stewards and the events experienced here.

Gazing across the meadow it is easy to envision the scenes of yesteryears; the cotton era, the soldiers coming home from wars, Native Americans using this highest of terrain to live and leave their relics as evidence, even to the time when strange creatures indeed called this place theirs. As night falls, the enchantment continues while you sleep beneath a roof suspended by whole trees for rafters and on floors supported by hand hewn logs bearing the evidence of personal attention to each timber. The walls show the presence of unsized members, with deviations from straightline expectations, and odd angles constitute the corners. The essence of the place prevails and you slip into an easy alliance, realizing that these are not imperfections, but the solid, stalwart characteristics of an original.

The overpowering aura slowly captures your spirit, bringing realization of the commonality you share and instilling a solace you carry when you leave. Just as this place draws its strength from solidarity with its uniqueness, in turn you accept the virtue of your uniqueness, withstanding the constant pressures to conformity.
